1990 Census Data for Housing and Population

Help with Database Query

Select a State

First select a State you are interested in.  In this version, you can only perform queries on one state at a time.

Geographic Area Files

Select the basic geographic area unit for which you would like to see data.

Geographic Area Records: County File

Each record in this file contains data for a single County within a State. The following table contains the first four records returned for a query on the County file for Georgia:

State County Total Housing Units Number Houses Built Before 1950 Percent Houses Built Before 1950
Georgia Appling 6,629 1,223 18.4
Georgia Atkinson 2,449 457 18.7
Georgia Bacon 3,859 666 17.3
Georgia Baker 1,499 224 14.9

Geographic Area Records: ZIP Codes File

Each record in this file contains data for a single 1990 ZIP Code within a State. Keep in mind that there were fewer ZIP Codes in 1990, and the ZIP Code areas are not the same as the those today.

The following table contains the first four records returned for a query on the ZIP Code file for Georgia:

State ZIP Code Total Housing Units Number Houses Built Before 1950 Percent Houses Built Before 1950
Georgia 30001 10,925 789 7.2
Georgia 30002 2,202 474 21.5
Georgia 30021 8,579 525 6.1
Georgia 30027 2,407 141 5.9

Geographic Area Records: ZIP Codes and Counties File

Each record within this file contains data for an area within BOTH a 1990 ZIP Code and a County.  Typically, a County includes areas from one or more Zip Codes.  For example, Butts County, Georgia includes areas from Zip Codes 30216, 30233, 30234 and 30257:

State County Zip Code Total Housing Units Number Houses Built Before 1950 Percent Houses Built Before 1950
Georgia Butts 30216 743 159 21.4
Georgia Butts 30233 4,377 685 15.6
Georgia Butts 30234 416 69 16.6
Georgia Butts 30257 0 0

There are no houses in the portion of the Zip Code 30257 in Butts County.  Other areas of Zip Code 30257, however, are within Lamar and Pike counties:

State County Zip Code Total Housing Units Number Houses Built Before 1950 Percent Houses Built Before 1950
Georgia Butts 30257 0 0
Georgia Lamar 30257 1,422 294 20.7
Georgia Pike 30257 62 12 19.4

Geographic Area Records: Census Tracts File

Each record represents a 1990 Census Tract within the county.  A county is divided into Census Tracts. A Census Tract is entirely within a county.  Census Tracts are identified by numbers, such as "010010001.00".  Some Census Tract numbers (ending with ".99") do not represent real physical areas -- they are used to help enumerate population living on boats and ships.

Geographic Area Records: Census Tracts File

Each record represents a 1990 Census Tract Block Group within the county.  A Census Tract  is divided into one or more Block Groups.  A Block Group is entirely within a Census Tract.

Submitting Queries

Select the Geographic Area File:

Specify the Maximum of Records

A query to this database may return hundreds of records (rows in the result table).    You may wish to preview a sample of the records and then refine your query.   Enter the maximum number of returned records in the "Show TOP Records" text box (default is 20 records returned).

Choose Whether to Display Maps

If the "Show Maps" check box is checked, then one or more maps will may be displayed automatically with each query.

Choose "More Data" for Detailed Data and Maps

If the "Show More Data" check box is checked, then additional columns entitled "More Data" will appear as the leftmost and rightmost columns in the results.  You can click on those links to see more detailed maps of the geographic area and all the information in the database for this area.

Choose Option to Display Fields

If the "Show Fields" check box is checked, then the list of data fields are shown after the query results.  You can select the fields to include or exclude for the next query by checking or unchecking the boxes for each of the fields.

Apply Filter Conditions

You can specify a range of values for numeric fields.  The first entry is the minimum value and the second entry is the maximum value for that field.  For example, if you enter "1000" and "2000" for the range in "Total Population" then the query results will only include geographic areas with at least 1000 but no more than 2000 people.  If you want areas with at least 1000 people (but no upper bound) then enter "1000" as the first entry and leave the second entry blank.  Similarly, if you want areas with at most 2000 people (but no lower bound) then enter "2000" as the second entry.  You can specify the range values for any number of fields that are shown.

Sort Geographic Area Records

Most fields shown include an option to to select that field to be sorted.  You can also select the sort order as ascending ("Lo..Hi") or descending (Hi..Lo).   When you submit the query again, the results will be sorted on this field. Only one field can be sorted for each query. The field column that is sorted will be shown with a highlighted color.  State and county fields may be sorted automatically on some queries.  When this happens, these fields are also shown with highlighted color.

Send Request to the Web Server

Click the "Submit" button to send the request to the Web server.  Click the "Reset" button to undo changes you have made.

More About Maps

The maps show the geographic areas identified in the query result that is returned on the Web page.  For example, if the query identified 100 counties but only 20 are returned because of  "Show TOP Records" setting, then only these 20 counties are identified on the map.

Maps may not appear with some queries:
