The CDC's National Center for Chronic Disease Prevention and
Health Promotion and Public Health Law Program, working side-by-side
with the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and the American Society for
Law, Medicine, and Ethics, jointly convened the 2008 National Summit on
Legal Preparedness for Obesity Prevention and Control. The summit was
held on June 18-20, 2008 and focused on the legal issues that affect,
both directly and indirectly, nutrition and physical activity factors that
are implicated in the public
health epidemic of obesity.
The purpose of the Summit was to develop a shared national agenda of practical steps that practitioners and policy-makers in the many relevant sectors partners can consider implementing to improve the contribution law makes to preventing obesity and addressing its impact. The summit brought together key stakeholders and decision makers from many sectors in a structured, participatory process to assess the current status of laws and legal authorities associated with obesity prevention and control. Participants identified many opportunities to improve legal preparedness for obesity prevention and control. Multi-disciplined teams of authors captured these and additional opportunities in the summit proceedings, especially in the "legal action options" presented in the four "Improving..." chapter (pages 62-109) and in the "Legal Action Options Table" (pages 110-121.)
