You are at risk for Meningitis if you
- Have a missing or non-functional spleen. Your spleen has been
removed or doesn’t function. One dose of meningococcal vaccine is usually
recommended, although an additional dose may be needed if you continue
to be at high risk. Check with your doctor.
- Are 11-18 years of age.
- Are a first-year college student. If you are a first-year college student AND live
in a dormitory, you should receive this vaccine.
- Are an international traveler. You should receive this vaccine
if you travel to or live in countries where meningitis is widespread,
such as the "meningitis belt" of sub-Saharan African during
the dry season (December through June) or to Saudi Arabia in association
with the Hajj pilgrimage.
- Are a Laboratory worker or microbiologist. If you work in a
research, clinical, or industrial laboratory and are routinely exposed
to meningococcal bacteria, you should receive this vaccine.
- Are a military recruit.
- Have persistent complement component deficiency, an immune system
disorder. Talk with your doctor or healthcare professional to find
out about your need for meningococcal vaccine. The vaccine is given
for certain diseases of the immune system.
