QUERY EXAMPLE
Here we will provide
an example to illustrate proper use of the Query Page. Let's
assume a user would like to see a two way frequency table showing "pesticide
functional class" by "Severity". Additionally, the user only
wants the counts to include cases who are "White" or "Black", "Male" or "Female",
exposed in "California" or "Florida" or "New York" or "Texas",
with status "Definite" or "Probable" or "Possible", in the
year "1999", and "Age less than 35 years".
Step 1
The image below
shows section 1 of the Query Page. The Gender Box shows the
user selected both "Male" and "Female". One can see that these
values are selected because they are highlighted and the "Gender" header
is green. To select more than one value in a variable box,
click on the first value then hold hold down the "cntl" key
when clicking additional values in the same variable box. The
Race Box shows both "Black" and "White" were selected. Since
the user does not want to subset based on the Hispanic demographic,
the user did nothing. One can determine that nothing is selected
for Hispanic because the header is black. The output will not
be restricted by Hispanic ethnicity(i.e., the results will
not be effected by Hispanic ethnicity). For states, the State
Box shows only "New York" and "Texas" as selected, but "California" and "Florida" were
selected also. They aren't visible because the box is not large
enough to see all selected entries. Also, the selections are
not contiguous in this box. Therefore the user clicked on "California" and
then while depressing the "cntl" key, clicked on "Florida", "New
York", and "Texas". For Status, the user first clicked on "Definite",
and because all required selections for this box are contiguous,
the user held down the "shift" key and clicked on "Possible"(the
user could also hold down the cntl key and click each of the
3 values individually). The user employed the techniques just
discussed to select values for year and age group.
