Step 2: Geographic Area Files

Select geographic area file:

Geographic Area File Records
County Each record is for a single County within a State
ZIP Codes Each record is for a single 1990 ZIP code
ZIP Codes and Counties Each record is for the area within BOTH a 1990 ZIP code and a County

Geographic Area Records: County File

Each record in this file contains data for a single County within a State. The following table contains the first four records returned for a query on the County file for Georgia:

State County Total Housing Units Number Houses Built Before 1950 Percent Houses Built Before 1950
Georgia Appling 6,629 1,223 18.4
Georgia Atkinson 2,449 457 18.7
Georgia Bacon 3,859 666 17.3
Georgia Baker 1,499 224 14.9

Geographic Area Records: ZIP Codes File

Each record in this file contains data for a single 1990 ZIP Code within a State. Keep in mind that there were fewer ZIP Codes in 1990, and the ZIP Code areas are not the same as the those today.

The following table contains the first four records returned for a query on the ZIP Code file for Georgia:

State ZIP Code Total Housing Units Number Houses Built Before 1950 Percent Houses Built Before 1950
Georgia 30001 10,925 789 7.2
Georgia 30002 2,202 474 21.5
Georgia 30021 8,579 525 6.1
Georgia 30027 2,407 141 5.9

Geographic Area Records: ZIP Codes and Counties File

Each record within this file contains data for an area within BOTH a 1990 ZIP Code and a County.  Typically, a County includes areas from one or more ZIP Codes.  For example, Butts County, Georgia includes areas from ZIP Codes 30216, 30233, 30234 and 30257:

State County Zip Code Total Housing Units Number Houses Built Before 1950 Percent Houses Built Before 1950
Georgia Butts 30216 743 159 21.4
Georgia Butts 30233 4,377 685 15.6
Georgia Butts 30234 416 69 16.6
Georgia Butts 30257 0 0

There are no housing units in the portion of the ZIP Code 30257 in Butts County.  Other areas of ZIP Code 30257, however, are within Lamar and Pike counties:

State County Zip Code Total Housing Units Number Houses Built Before 1950 Percent Houses Built Before 1950
Georgia Butts 30257 0 0
Georgia Lamar 30257 1,422 294 20.7
Georgia Pike 30257 62 12 19.4

Step 3. Specify Georgrahic Areas

Retrieve geographic area records for:
State:County:**

ZIP Codes:** Min: Max:

Selection Field Required? Acceptable Values Comments
State Yes Select a state from the list provided. The default State is Alabama. Only one State can be selected.
County No* To select only within a particular county, enter that county's name.

You only need to enter the beginning letters of the County name.  For example, if you select the State of Connecticut, then you can just enter HART in County to select HARTFORD County.

More than one County may be selected this way.  In Connecticut, if you enter NEW in County, you are selecting both NEW HAVEN and NEW LONDON  counties.

A ZIP Code may cross county boundaries.  If a county is selected, then data are shown only for the portion of the zip code within that county.
ZIP Codes No* To select a range of ZIP Codes, enter the first one in the Min field and the last one in the Max field.  For example, entering Min: 90001 and Max: 90003 will select 90001, 90002 and 90003.

To select all ZIP codes above a certain one, enter that ZIP code in the Min field and leave the Max field balnk.

To select a single ZIP Code, enter that ZIP code in both the Min and Max fields.

A ZIP Code may cross county boundaries.  If the County field is left blank, then all Counties  that include the Zip Code(s) will be selected.

* Fields that are not required may be left blank in the query form

Step 4. Enter Selection Criteria (Filter)

You can restrict the geographic areas in the result by specifying one or more selection criteria or conditon that must be met.  Enter a numeric value in the box shown for each desired condition.  The result will include only geographic records that meet all the conditions.

Include ONLY geographic area records that meet ALL of the following criteria:
Pre-1950 Housing: or more AND
Pre-1950 Housing:% or higher AND
Children Under 6 Years: or more AND
Non-White Population:% or higher AND
Children Under 6 Years in Poverty:% or higher

Selection Field Acceptable Values Comments
Pre-1950 Housing To select geographic areas that have at least a certain number of housing units built in 1950 or earlier, enter that number in this field.

The default value is 1 (at least one house in the Zip Code area within the county.)

A ZIP Code may cross county boundaries.  Some county / ZIP Code areas may have no housing units because the part of the ZIP Code with housing units are in other counties.

To include all County / ZIP Code areas regardless of how many houses are in these areas, leave this field blank or enter 0.

Percent Pre-1950 Housing To select geographic areas that have at least a certain percentages of housing units built in 1950 or earlier, enter that number in this field. A ZIP Code may cross county boundaries.  Some county / ZIP Code areas may have no housing units because the part of the ZIP Code with housing units are in other counties.
Children Under 6 Years To select geographic areas that have at least a certain number of children under 6 years of age, enter that number in this field.
Percent of Non-White Population To select geographic areas that have at least a certain percentage of non-white population, enter that percentage in this field. Percentages may be 0 to 100.
Percent Children Under 6 Years in Poverty To select geographic areas that have at least a certain percentage children under 6 years below the poverty level in 1989, enter that percentage in this field. Percentages may be 0 to 100.

Step 5. Specify Sort Order of Geographic Area Records

Specify a sort order for the geograohic area records.  The data field (variable) to be sorted should be included in the list of data fields (Step 1 above).  The sorted data field is highlighted in the result table.

Sort the geographic area records by:

Show Results Sorted By: Comments
County Name For geographic area files that include county names, sort the geographic area records first by County name (alphabetical).   If the areas alco inlclude ZIP Codes, then sort the ZIP codes within the county (lowest to highest).
ZIP Code For geographic area files that include ZIP codes, sort the geographic area records first by ZIP code (lowest to highest).    If the areas alco inlclude County names, then sort the county names (alphabetical) within each ZIP code.
Number of Houses Built Before 1950 Sort geographic area records by the Number of Houses Built Before 1950 (highest to lowest)
Percentage of Houses Built Before 1950 Sort geographic area records by the Percentage of Houses Built Before 1950 (highest to lowest)
Number of Children Under 6 Years Sort geographic area records by the Number of Children Under 6 Years (highest to lowest)
Percentage of Non-White Population Sort geographic area records by the Percentage of Non-White Population (highest to lowest)
Percentage of Children Under 6 Years in Poverty Sort geographic area records by the Percentage of Children Under 6 Years Below Poverty Level in 1989 (highest to lowest)

Step 6. Specify the Maximum of Records

Show Top (1-1000) geographic area records

A query to this database may return thousands of records (rows in the result table).    You may wish to preview a sample of the records and then refine your query.   Enter the maximum number (up to 1000) of returned records for each query.

Step 7. Select Option to Show Field List and SQL Query

Check the box for "Fields" to show the data fields (variables) list in the result.  Check the box for "SQL Query" to show the SQL statement used to generate the results.  The SQL statement is the only place where selection criteria informaion is shown in the result page.

Show: Fields      SQL Query

Example results with "Fields" list and "SQL Query" statement options selected:

About 1990 Census Data

Are'nt there more data fields in the 1990 Census STF 3A and 3B files?
Yes. The data fields (and additional computed fields) included in this database are selected based on potential usefulness to childhood lead poisoning screening.

Are the 1990 ZIP codes the same as the ones today?
No.  There are more ZIP codes today and the boundaries are not the same.

Why aren't there data for 1998 ZIP codes?
The data are public released statistics from the Census Bureau.  Since the Censur Bureau does not release data on individuals or by street address, we cannot convert the statistics based on 1990 ZIP code boundaries to today's ZIP code boundaries.
