CDC Unified Process at PHIN 2007

The Public Health Information Network (PHIN) annual PHIN conference is hosted by the CDC and its partners. This year the 2007 PHIN conference will be held in Atlanta, Georgia from August 27–29 at the OMNI Hotel at the CNN Center in down town Atlanta.

The annual PHIN Conference is one opportunity to advance the vision of Public Health Information Networks with partners and share experiences in implementing PHIN. The PHIN vision encompasses the development and use of information systems addressing a number of public health areas including:

• Early event detection
• Surveillance and monitoring
• Epidemiologic case investigation and outbreak management
• Partner communications and alerting
• Counter measure response administration, distance learning and knowledge management
• Laboratory and clinical data management from both the public and private sectors

The goals and objectives of the PHIN conferences are to improve the ability of public health stakeholders to advance CDC's PHIN initiative and National Health IT Initiatives by:

1.  Providing an overview of all National Health IT Initiatives
2. Providing an update on progress on the PHIN initiative, products, and services
3. Sharing information on how to actively engage in the PHIN Collaborative Process and National Health IT Initiatives
4. Highlighting and share best practices and success stories in internal and external collaborations
5. Providing opportunities for dialogue among stakeholders to share concrete skills, practical applications and experiences to advance interoperability and knowledge management
6. Providing the latest research in public health informatics

The CDC Unified Process (UP) first attended an annual PHIN conference in May of 2005 and then again in September of 2006 where the concept of best practice project management attracted visitors from around the world to the PHIN demonstration booth where the CDC UP Team had setup a kiosk to demonstrate the new CDC UP website. Kiosk traffic was brisk and interest remained high throughout the duration of the PHIN conference.

The CDC UP Team also presented a poster during the 2006 PHIN Poster Session entitled A Common Project Delivery Framework – The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Unified Process. The poster presentation was a smash hit drawing interest from agency representatives from around the world as people crowded the poster area stacked four or five deep to hear about the CDC Unified Process.

As a result of the tremendous interest in, and successful showing of, the CDC Unified Process at the 2006 PHIN conference it was decided to expand the CDC UPs presence at this year’s 2007 PHIN conference.

In 2007 the CDC UP Team has increased its participation in PHIN with a focus on bringing additional attention to the ever increasing popularity of formalized, best practice, project management in the public health sector. We plan to do this by:

• Tutoring on the topic of An Introduction to Project Management in a post conference tutorial session on Thursday August 30th from 1:00PM-5:00PM in the Juniper conference room, M2 North Tower. This tutorial will be an introductory high-level course on project management and will provide an overview of the project management disciplines including how it can help organizations deliver successful results incorporating the Project Management Institute’s (PMI) Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK).
• Presenting the topic of Project Management at a PHIN Concurrent Session on Tuesday August 28th from 10:00AM-11:30AM in the Grand Ballroom A-B conference room, M4 North Tower. This session will provide an overview of building solid business practices for successful project management. First, presenters will discuss lessons learned on how to build stronger foundation for project management using a Program Management Office (PMO). Second, presenters will outline the benefits of a project management methodology and best practices to assist project managers in navigating through the challenges of delivering projects on time, within budget, and meeting objectives. The final portion of the session will discuss the CDC Project Management Community of Practice (PMCoP) and its innovative ability to create an effective strategy for successful projects.
• Displaying a poster illustrating the CDC Unified Process as it might be applied to a project. The 4’ x 8’ CDC UP poster entitled, Applying Project Management Best Practices Using the CDC Unified Process, will be displayed throughout the duration of the conference and be highlighted in a 2-hour poster session on Monday August 27th from 2:30PM-4:30PM in the main exhibit hall atrium. At this poster session at least one member of the CDC UP Team will be present to discuss the content of the poster with interested observers.
• Demonstrating the CDC UP website during two times slot at a kiosk located within the PHIN Demonstration Booth. The CDC UP website will be demonstrated on Sunday August 26th from 5:00PM-7:30PM and Tuesday August 28th from 10:00AM-12:45PM
